Metacommunication

The book Metacommunication in Spanish Autobiographical Texts by Dr. Jeannette Hark tackles several current and hereforeto neglected problem areas in philology: the textual-linguistic evaluation at the meta-communication level of texts, for the purpose of text type classification and history, criteria for dialogicity and literariness as well as the possible combination of linguistics and study of literature in text interpretation. In this regard several prescribed texts were analysed, to extend previous, overwhelmingly language-analysis-based findings with metacommunication (commentary on the methods of communication).

Metacommunicative explanatory notes have various objectives and can throw light on narrative processes. These metacommunicative accompanying notes are the central theme of this book. It demonstrates a model for expression and text function, developed on theoretical underpinnings, operating on a heterogeneous corpus, concentrating on explanatory significance at the metacommunicative text-level.

Metacommunication supports the target language using non-language references to avoid communication impediments, and alongside working with the formal text construction and content properties, above all it modifies the relationship between the communication partners. Within these three text relationship levels (Structure-Content-Connection), metacommunication is apparent in the expression of various functions. These functions are distributed and varied specifically according to text type, and their use is controlled by the text’s function and the language handling objectives.

Metacommunication is a regulating mechanism, use of which can enable enhanced control over text (optimisation of structure, expression and comprehensibility) and recipient (effectiveness optimisation). The more doubt a speaker has about the acceptance on the recipient’s side of the intended effect of his language use, the more relevant is the use of metacommunication.
